Bivalve facilitation mediates seagrass recovery from physical disturbance in a temperate estuary

چکیده

Rapid global degradation of coastal habitats can be attributed to anthropogenic activities associated with development, aquaculture, and recreational surface water use. Restoration degraded has proven challenging costly, there is a clear need develop novel approaches that promote resilience human-caused disturbances. Positive interactions between species mitigate environmental stress recent work suggests incorporating positive into restoration efforts may improve outcomes. We hypothesized the addition potential facultative mutualist, native hard clam (Mercenaria mercenaria), could enhance seagrass bed recovery from disturbance. conducted two experiments examine independent interacting effects physical disturbance mimicking propeller scarring on mixed community Zostera marina Halodule wrightii beds in North Carolina. Adding clams exposed experimental generally enhanced summer growth rates autumn shoot densities. In contrast, non-disturbed did not result any increase or Clam enhancement percent cover relative areas without was most prominent after Hurricane Dorian, suggesting also repeated By June next growing season, disturbed additions had greater than additions. Beds were April higher previous season. Our results suggest timing occurrence disturbances modify ability facilitate resiliency productivity. Understanding when how utilize positive, interspecific key for improving success rates.

Losses and recovery of organic carbon from a seagrass ecosystem following disturbance.

Seagrasses are among the Earth's most efficient and long-term carbon sinks, but coastal development threatens this capacity. We report new evidence that disturbance to seagrass ecosystems causes release of ancient carbon. In a seagrass ecosystem that had been disturbed 50 years ago, we found that soil carbon stocks declined by 72%, which, according to radiocarbon dating, had taken hundreds to t...

Modeling Seagrass Density and Distribution in Response to Changes in Turbidity Stemming from Bivalve Filtration and Seagrass Sediment Stabilization

In many areas of the North American mid-Atlantic coast, seagrass beds are either in decline or have disappeared due, in part, to high turbidity that reduces the light reaching the plant surface. Because of this reduction in the areal extent of seagrass beds there has been a concomitant diminishment in dampening of water movement (waves and currents) and sediment stabilization. Due to ongoing de...

Seed germination in a southern Australian temperate seagrass

In a series of experiments, seeds from a temperate seagrass species, Zostera nigricaulis collected in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, Australia were exposed to a range of salinities (20 PSU pulse/no pulse, 25 PSU, 30 PSU, 35 PSU), temperatures (13 °C, 17 °C, 22 °C), burial depths (0 cm, 1 cm, 2 cm) and site specific sediment characteristics (fine, medium, coarse) to quantify their impacts on germin...

Contribution of seagrass plants to CO2 capture in a tropical seagrass meadow under experimental disturbance

Coastal vegetative habitats are known to be highly productive environments with a high ability to capture and store carbon. During disturbance this important function could be compromised as plant photosynthetic capacity, biomass, and/or growth are reduced. To evaluate effects of disturbance on CO2 capture in plants we performed a five-month manipulative experiment in a tropical seagrass (Thala...

A Comparison of Fish Assemblages from Seagrass and Unvegetated Areas of a Southern Australian Estuary

Assemblages of small fish from eelgrass (mainly Zostera muelleri) and unvegetated patches in a shallow, marine-dominated estuary were compared over one year as a preliminary step towards finding the consequences of eelgrass loss to small fish. There were more species and more individuals at eelgrass sites than at unvegetated sites at every sampling period. Multivariate analysis (MDS ordination)...
